This guide is for visitors who want to reach the Iya Valley in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku. It covers the train, the expressway bus, the car and the bus and taxi options once you are near the gorges.

We used the English website of the Miyoshi City Tourism Association, called Oboke Iya Tourist Navigation, and the Tokushima Prefectural Government. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Train and bus times change, so check the operators' own timetables before you go.

The two stations to know

The tourism association's access page names two JR stations. Awa-Ikeda is the main hub in Miyoshi City. Oboke is on the same Dosan Line, about 20 minutes from Awa-Ikeda by the Nanpu express. Many routes to the Iya Valley start at one of these two.

By train

The page gives these approximate times to Awa-Ikeda Station:

By expressway bus

The same page says a bus from Osaka to Awa-Ikeda Bus Terminal takes about 3 hours 50 minutes. From Kobe it takes about 3 hours. The operator is Shikoku Kotsu.

By car

The page lists drives to Awa-Ikeda of about 2 hours 30 minutes from Kobe and 1 hour 40 minutes from Okayama. From Takamatsu Airport and Tokushima Airport it gives 1 hour 20 minutes to Awa-Ikeda, and from Matsuyama Airport 1 hour 50 minutes. From Kochi Ryoma Airport it gives 1 hour 20 minutes to Oboke.

The association's FAQ names the closest expressway exits to the vine bridge. They are Ikawa-Ikeda on the Tokushima Road and Otoyo on the Kochi Road. It takes about 1 hour from each exit on National Route 32. It also notes that you can rent a car on the day, but advises booking in advance.

Buses to the gorges and the vine bridge

From JR Awa-Ikeda Station, the FAQ says four buses a day go to the vine bridge by way of Oboke, and three go by way of Deai. That makes seven in total. The Tokushima prefecture page says you can also take a Miyoshi municipal bus from Oboke Station to the Kazura-bashi stop, then walk for about a minute.

To buy tickets, leave the Awa-Ikeda station gate and turn right on to Sakae-cho street. The bus terminal is on your right after about 300 metres, or four minutes' walk. The FAQ says there is also a tourist information office in front of the station that gives maps.

Taxi and bus tours

The association lists taxi and bus tours on its taxi page. One taxi tour covers the double vine bridges of Oku-Iya and the valley. It takes about 6 hours, with an estimated fare of about 29,400 yen for a regular taxi that fits up to four people. The page tells visitors to contact the taxi companies directly.

Where to leave luggage

The FAQ says baggage storage is available at Ikeda Station, Oboke Station and the Iya Kazurabashi Yume Butai visitor facility. It points to a download page for details.
